It has been inhabited since pre-Columbian times and was the site where the town of San Salvador was founded in 1528, although it was short-lived. In 1786, Suchitoto became part of the San Salvador District within the San Salvador Intendency. After the signing of the Chapultepec Peace Accords in 1992, Suchitoto began its reconstruction and the return of its residents, becoming since then a tourist landmark of El Salvador. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1975.
